This is where we collect the dates worth putting in a calendar: adoption drives, pet expos, low-cost vaccination and microchip clinics, spay and neuter days, and the product recalls and safety notices that owners in the United States need to hear about quickly.

Dates that come round every year
Even in a quiet month, these recurring observances are useful anchors for planning a checkup, a shelter visit or a safety review at home:
- Pet Poison Prevention Week — March. A good moment to audit what is reachable: medications, xylitol, lilies, antifreeze, rodenticides.
- Adopt a Shelter Pet Day — 30 April. Many shelters run reduced-fee adoptions around this date.
- National Pet Week — the first full week of May, promoted by the American Veterinary Medical Association, and traditionally paired with wellness exam campaigns.
- Summer heat season — June to August. Hot pavement, parked cars, flat-faced breeds and small mammals overheating above 80 °F.
- National Dog Day — 26 August, and National Cat Day — 29 October.
- Holiday season — November and December. Chocolate, cooked bones, tinsel, lilies, string and unattended candles cause a spike in emergency visits every year.
